Terms like low molecular weight, high molecular weight, or nano hyaluronic acid are a clearer signal when a brand does include them. If a product only lists hyaluronic acid once with no further detail, there is a decent chance you are looking at a single-weight formula, however well it is marketed.

This is also why serum texture is not a reliable clue on its own. A thicker gel does not automatically mean deeper hydration, and a thin watery texture does not automatically mean surface only. The molecular range is what determines depth, not viscosity.

Layering It Correctly Changes the Outcome

Even a well-formulated multi-weight serum underperforms if it is layered incorrectly. Apply it to slightly damp skin rather than fully dry skin, since hyaluronic acid needs available water molecules to bind to in order to do its job at all.

Follow it immediately with a moisturizer that includes occlusive ingredients like ceramides or squalane. This step is not optional. Without something to seal the surface, the water that hyaluronic acid pulls in can evaporate straight back out, taking some of your own skin moisture with it.

Molecular weight is that detail, and once you start checking for it, it becomes hard to unsee.

A serum built across multiple molecular weights is doing more coordinated work than its price tag or packaging might suggest, and skin that has been chronically under-hydrated on the surface only tends to respond to it almost immediately.
