Angbuilgu: The Sundial King Sejong Gave to His People

Imagine trying to tell time without a phone, a watch, or even the ability to read. No numbers on a wall, no chime from a tower. Just the sky. That was daily life for most people in early Joseon Korea, and it bothered King Sejong enough that he decided to fix it.

His solution sat in a public square, shaped like a bowl, and belonged to absolutely everyone.

What Exactly Is an Angbuilgu?

An Angbuilgu is a hemispherical bronze sundial, created in 1434 during King Sejong's reign. The name literally describes its shape: a concave bowl tilted toward the sky, catching the sun's shadow the way a satellite dish catches a signal.

Anyone walking past, regardless of rank or literacy, could glance at the shadow and know roughly what hour it was.

The mechanics are simpler than they look, and that simplicity was the whole point.

Because the bowl is curved rather than flat, the shadow moves at a more even, readable pace, which made the Angbuilgu noticeably more practical than the flat sundials used elsewhere at the time.

The Year Korean Science Peaked

Here's how it happened. In 1434, Sejong did not commission just one invention. He set an entire team of scholars and engineers loose on the problem of time itself, and the Angbuilgu was only one result.

The same year produced the Jagyeokru, a self-striking water clock engineered by the scientist Jang Yeong-sil. Unlike the Angbuilgu, which only worked in daylight, the Jagyeokru used the steady flow of water to mark hours around the clock, day or night. At the appointed hour, it triggered a mechanism that struck a bell, a gong, and a drum automatically, no human hand required. Installed at Borugak Pavilion inside the palace, it effectively became Hanyang's master clock, its signals cueing the opening and closing of the city's main gates.

Put the two inventions side by side and a clear division of labor appears. The Angbuilgu handled daylight, out in public, for anyone to check. The Jagyeokru handled the full twenty-four hours, from inside the palace, regulating the rhythm of the entire capital. Together, they covered a gap no single device could close alone.

Why So Few Survive

Almost none of the original 1434 sundials made it to the present day. Most historians believe they were destroyed or lost during the Japanese invasion of 1592, a war that devastated a huge share of Korea's early cultural and scientific heritage.

  • Only seven Angbuilgu sundials remain in Korea today, most produced later, in the eighteenth or nineteenth century, as replacements for the originals
  • Three more exist overseas, one in the United Kingdom and two in Japan

Some of the surviving sundials returned home only recently, discovered decades later at overseas auctions and quietly repatriated by Korean cultural heritage authorities. Every one of them tells the same story twice: once as a scientific instrument, and once as a survivor.

Why the Angbuilgu Still Matters Today

It is tempting to file the Angbuilgu away as a quaint historical curiosity, something that got replaced the moment clocks arrived. But look closer, and the idea behind it never really left.

Sejong's core insight was that accurate time should not be a privilege reserved for the palace. It should be free, public, and available to whoever needed it. That same instinct, accessible information built for everyday people, still runs through a huge amount of Korean technology and design today, from free public transit apps to the sheer number of public clocks and digital displays packed into Korean cities.
