Somewhere in the mid-20th century, most of Korea's East Asian musical relatives quietly made the same decision. China's guzheng moved to steel and nylon. Japan's koto followed a similar path. Across the region, ancient zither traditions modernized their strings for durability, volume, and easier tuning. Korea had every reason to do the same, and for a while, plenty of instrument makers did exactly that.

But a stubborn thread of the tradition never let go of something older and far more fragile: twisted silk. To understand why, you have to understand what that material was actually chosen for in the first place, and it was never about convenience.

What Myeongjusil Actually Is
Myeongjusil refers to raw silk fiber, spun and twisted into cord strong enough to be strung under tension across an instrument. It isn't a synthetic approximation of silk. It's the real fiber, produced the same way silk thread has always been produced, then wound tightly enough to hold pitch.

Turning something as delicate as a silk strand into a functional instrument string takes real patience. Multiple fine threads are twisted together into a single cord, then coated and treated to add enough tension resistance to survive being plucked, struck, or bent thousands of times without snapping. It's a labor-intensive process, and it's precisely why cheaper, mass-produced steel and nylon alternatives eventually became so tempting for instrument makers looking to save time.
The Eight Materials Behind Every Traditional Sound
Korean music has a genuinely old system for thinking about instrument materials, one documented in the Akhak gwebeom, a foundational music treatise compiled in 1493. Rather than grouping instruments by string, wind, or percussion the way modern classification does, this older framework sorted them by the raw material each one was built from.
- Bamboo, used for wind instruments like the daegeum and piri
- Silk, used for the strings of instruments like the geomungo and gayageum
- Metal, used for gongs, bells, and cymbals
- Skin, used for drum heads like the buk and janggu
- Gourd, used in instruments like the saenghwang
- Clay, used for the ocarina-like hun
- Stone, used for chime instruments like the pyeongyeong
- Wood, used for percussion blocks and instrument bodies
Silk held its own dedicated category in this system. It wasn't grouped in as a minor variation of something else. Ancient scholars considered the material itself to be inseparable from the character of the sound it produced, which is a very different mindset from simply asking what's cheapest or most durable to manufacture.
Why Silk Wins Where Steel Can't
This is where the philosophy stops being abstract and starts being genuinely practical. Silk strings are softer and more elastic than steel or nylon, and that flexibility isn't a weakness, it's the entire point. It allows a player's left hand to press, bend, and vibrate the string well beyond its resting pitch, a technique called nonghyeon.

Nonghyeon is the ornamentation at the emotional core of gayageum and geomungo performance: descending slides, upward pitch bends, and a wavering vibrato that mimics the inflection of a human voice. Steel strings resist that kind of manipulation. Push too hard and the pitch either barely moves or the string simply can't take the strain the way silk can. Silk gives the player something closer to clay than wire, a material they can genuinely shape in real time.
The Instruments Built Around This One Material
Once you know what to listen for, silk's fingerprint shows up across most of Korea's core string instruments.
- Geomungo, whose six silk strings are struck and plucked with a bamboo stick
- Gayageum, whose silk strings are pressed and plucked directly with the fingers
- Haegeum, a two-stringed bowed fiddle strung entirely in silk
- Ajaeng, a bowed zither whose lower, thicker silk strings give it an unusually deep, resonant voice
Every one of these instruments developed its most distinctive expressive techniques around what silk specifically allows a player to do, not around some fixed idea of what a string "should" be.
A Master Craftsman's Quiet Resistance
Today, most commercially produced gayageum use nylon-wrapped steel strings, which hold tuning longer and survive rougher handling. But a handful of master instrument makers, recognized as holders of Intangible Cultural Heritage status, still string their instruments entirely by hand with traditional myeongjusil. Their reasoning tends to circle back to the same point: silk carries a clarity and warmth in its tone that synthetic alternatives haven't managed to fully replicate, no matter how much more convenient those alternatives are to produce and maintain.
It's a small, quiet kind of resistance, choosing the harder, slower material because the sound it makes still can't be substituted.
Seeing the Craft Up Close
The National Museum of Korea's calligraphy and painting galleries hold historical depictions of scholars and musicians alongside their string instruments, offering a window into just how central these silk-stringed instruments were to everyday cultured life.

Every one of those painted strings represents hours of hand-twisted fiber, chosen centuries ago for a softness that steel, for all its convenience, still hasn't managed to replace.
